🛢️ MAY SAFETY TOPIC: HAZARD COMMUNICATION (HAZCOM)
For Construction & Oilfield Operations
🔍 What is Hazard Communication?
Hazard Communication (HazCom) ensures workers know what chemicals they’re exposed to and how to protect themselves. It follows the Occupational Safety and Health Administration standard (29 CFR 1910.1200).
⚠️ Why It Matters in Construction & Oilfield
Workers regularly handle or are exposed to:
- Drilling fluids and muds
- Fuels (diesel, gasoline)
- Solvents and degreasers
- Welding gases
- Cement, silica dust, and coatings
- Corrosion inhibitors and acids
⚠️ Improper handling can cause:
- Burns and skin irritation
- Respiratory issues
- Fires/explosions
- Long-term health effects
🧪 Key HazCom Elements
1. Chemical Labels
Every container must have:
- Product name
- Hazard warnings
- Manufacturer info
- Signal words (Danger/Warning)
👉 Never use unlabeled containers
2. Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
SDS provide detailed info on:
- Hazards
- First aid
- Handling & storage
- PPE requirements
📌 Must be accessible at all times (paper or digital)
3. GHS Pictograms (Know These!)
Common symbols you’ll see:
- ☠️ Skull & Crossbones → Acute toxicity
- 🔥 Flame → Flammable
- ⚠️ Exclamation → Irritant/harmful
- 🫁 Health hazard → Long-term effects
- 🧯 Corrosion → Burns skin/eyes
4. Employee Training
Workers must be trained on:
- Chemical hazards in their work area
- How to read labels & SDS
- Proper PPE use
- Spill response procedures
🦺 Best Practices on Site
✔️ Before Starting Work
- Review SDS for chemicals being used
- Inspect containers for labels
- Ensure proper PPE is available
✔️ During Work
- Use ventilation when required
- Keep chemicals sealed when not in use
- Never mix chemicals unless approved
✔️ After Work
- Store chemicals properly
- Dispose of waste correctly
- Report missing labels or leaks
🚨 Emergency Response
If exposure occurs:
- Stop work immediately
- Follow SDS first aid instructions
- Notify supervisor
- Seek medical help if needed
🛠️ Oilfield-Specific Hazards
- Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) exposure
- Methanol and other treatment chemicals
- High-pressure chemical injection systems
🏗️ Construction-Specific Hazards
- Silica dust (cutting concrete)
- Paints, coatings, adhesives
- Welding fumes and gases
💬 Toolbox Talk Questions
- Do you know where SDS are located?
- Have you used any unlabeled containers?
- What PPE is required for your current task?
- What would you do in a chemical spill?
